A TALE OF TWO SHOPS
6th October 2008
In a recent Retail Week article, entitled GOOD SHOP/BAD SHOP, by Rosemary Smart, a partner in Itim Consulting, a comparison was drawn between two individual sport’s shops. One was John Wood Sports, a member of the STAG Buying Group, in Wokingham town centre the other was Sports World in the Oracle Centre in Reading. Now, whilst we might all be familiar with the old saying that comparisons can be odious, none-the-less nothing could have prepared us for the utter starkness of this contrasting assessment.
John Wood was praised for knowing his stuff, having an impressive range and was reaping the rewards for remaining focused over more than 38 years. More than competing with larger sports stores in Reading, his staff was singled out for special mention in providing a very good service. The window displays reflected the store’s range and depth and although, perhaps, not having the level of promotions as the other shops there was common sense shown in service and pricing which helped the shopper on a budget. In all, it was noted, John Wood provided a differentiation welcomed in this market.
Sport’s World, on the other hand, was taken to task for its limited range and for the store’s disappointing layout. It was difficult, it seemed, to beat a path through the crammed store where items had to be hunted down by customers to find the right size. Fine for discounted trainers but not, it was thought, a lot of good for anything else.
Well, there you have it. What a remarkable contrast between two outlets. We are naturally delighted that one of our members was chosen for such praise but also that the article shines such a positive and well-earned light on an independent retailer, the heartbeat of the sport’s trade.
COLEMAN® EUROPE JOINS STAG ADDING FURTHER IMPETUS TO THE BUYING GROUP’S GROWTH
29th September 2008
Coleman®, the leading brand name for outdoor products worldwide, has joined STAG, the country’s premier Buying Group.
“We believe that our new arrangement with STAG heralds an important step forward in underpinning our sales and distribution strategy towards the independent outdoor retailer” said Colin Curtis, the brand’s Sales and Marketing Director, commenting on the tie up. He continued, “It is no wonder, therefore, that we have turned to STAG because of their foremost position in the independent retail market”.
The collaboration between the two brands, Coleman® and STAG, comes at an auspicious moment for both organisations when STAG is looking to cement its pre-eminent position in both the sports and outdoor markets with a string of high profile signings and Coleman® is looking to extend their reach across the UK with a more sustained focus on their distribution strategy towards the independents.
Final words with Ward Robertson, Managing Director of STAG: “Coleman® is synonymous with high quality innovative products for the great outdoors and we, as an organisation, see scope, opportunity and potential for a brand that carries such a high level of dependability and authenticity. It is fair to say that both brands share a common philosophy in the belief that the independent retailer is the heartbeat of both our businesses.”
STAG CHOSEN AGAIN AS OFFICIAL BUYING GROUP
FOR OUTDOOR TRADE SHOW 2008
29th September 2008
STAG is delighted to announce that, for the second year, they will be the Official Buying Group at the Outdoor Trade Show 2008, is being held at Stoneleigh Park Exhibition Centre, Stoneleigh Park, in Warwickshire, from September 30th – October 2nd.
Although the show was only launched in 2006 it has seen a 40% increase in visitor numbers and has quickly established itself as the pre-eminent show of its size and capacity having completely sold out this year.
The Outdoor Trade Show has proved an important showcase for independent outdoor and general sports retailers.
STAG Sees Strong Market Growth.
25th September 2008
STAG continues to perform well in all markets as more members and suppliers seek to join the Buying Group. September has been a particularly successful month where STAG has performed impressively and the strategic drive for growth has accelerated markedly and brought dividends. This performance, in turn, brings greater benefits to everyone in our community. It brings members closer to suppliers and vice versa, it also sharpens the competitive edge, extends choice and provides more consumers with a better deal all round.
POLIMIL LINKS UP WITH STAG
AS BUYING GROUP’S BUYING POWER DRAWS RETAILERS
23rd September 2008
Polimil Ltd, the leading specialist e-commerce retailer of police, military and security equipment and clothing in Leicestershire has agreed to join the STAG Buying Group.
The decision to link-up with STAG was underlined by Sean Cayless, Polimil’s owner: “One of the key benefits in joining STAG was the inviting potential of being able to extend the range of brands that we can offer to our sports shop customers. It offers us the prospect of making the small orders, that we wouldn’t be able to make without joining STAG, which, in turn, enables us to test the market with other products without the risk and expense of a large stock holding.”
Warming to the subject, he continued: “We can now test brands in a strategic way and see how our existing customers respond to new offerings and how, through this approach, we can extend our reach locally and draw in new customers.”
“Joining STAG” he added “Raises our status as a retailer, gives us substantially more credibility in the market and greatly increases our buying clout”
Commenting on the logic of joining the Buying Group, Ward Robertson, STAG’s Managing Director said: “From the conversations and the discussions we have had with our members, new and existing, one theme stands out clearly an unequivocally that joining the STAG Buying Group adds positively to their bottom line.
“Whilst the prospect of an economy flirting with recession concentrates the mind wonderfully” Ward continued, “There is also a universal consensus amongst our members that being part of a larger community of interests adds to their standing and their position in the market. Put another way, it gives added meaning to the old adage that there is safety in numbers and that there is strength in numbers, too.
CARDIFF SPORTS JOINS STAG AS BUYING GROUP
SETS SIGHTS ON RETAIL.
22nd September 2008
Cardiff Sportsgear, considered by many to be the largest independent sports shop in Wales, family owned and run and with over forty years experience in the industry has joined the STAG Buying Group.
Andrew Jordan, owner of Cardiff Sportsgear explains: “There are a range of benefits that flow from joining STAG but I have to say the most important for us is the prospect of a healthier bottom line.” He continued: There is little doubt that being part of the STAG Buying Group has given us a sharper and more competitive edge and has allowed us to contain costs appreciably. Cost savings have always played a key part in running any business but it’s clear to us that if there was ever a time when that has leapfrogged to the top of the list of business priorities, that time is now.”
Ward Robertson, Managing Director of STAG, sees the link with Cardiff Sportsgear as significant for the Buying Group. “The independent retailer is the High Street’s heartbeat. They are the central hubs of the community and offer a service that is unique and one the consumer recognises as special and tailored specifically to them. It is a style of selling and a highly specialized approach, full of enterprise, which just cannot be replicated by the larger and more impersonal chains.
WEYBRIDGE SPORTS OPTS FOR STAG AS BUYING GROUP
CONTINUES TO BUILD MARKET SHARE.
19th September 2008
Weybridge Sports, the Surrey based, family run and owned sports retailer has joined the STAG Buying Group.
This link-up with STAG comes at a time when the fast-growing Buying Group is seen to be flexing its muscles in the retail sector by drawing more independents into membership of the Group.
Drawing attention to STAG’s strategy in ramping up its activity towards the independent retailer, Ward Robertson, STAG’s Managing Director, said: “The independent retailer is the last bastion of customer led service on the High Street. They are experienced and have the technical knowledge to help and advise the customer at a time when the advances made in the manufacture of sports products and the levels of technological sophistication make choice that much more complicated.”
Adding: “It is hardly surprising that the High Street as a vibrant shopping nucleus is staging a comeback against the more characterless out-of-town developments.”
Gordon Dawes owner of Weybridge Sports: “Although the reason we chose to go with the STAG Buying Group wasn’t all about costs it did play an important part in the decision we made. We believe that being able to contain costs make the difference between a reasonable bottom line and a very good one.”
Gordon continued: “With the economy depressed it is only natural for any business to seek ways of reducing overheads. That concern was in the forefront of our minds when we talked to STAG and it was that consideration that tipped the balance in favour of us linking up with them. At the same time, I should add that we also firmly believe that other important benefits will flow from what was, after all, a hard-nosed business decision.”
ANATOM JOINS STAG AS BUYING GROUP REINFORCES
ITS LEADERSHIP CREDENTIALS
16 September 2008
London, September 2008. Anatom, the Edinburgh based UK and international distributor of specialist sports and lifestyle brands; TEKO® socks, Superfeet® Advanced Insole Systems, The Brannock Device® patented foot measuring system, Backcountry Access ®snow-safety equipment and Life is good® clothing and accessories has joined STAG, the premier British buying group. Additionally Anatom is the UK’s leading provider of performance footwear fitting workshops for retail staff, helping to keep specialist independent retail, specialist.
This agreement with STAG coincides with Anatom acquiring the Pacerpole® brand, a manufacturer of ergonomically designed fitness walking and trekking poles bringing together a perfect product synergy between it’s different brands whilst STAG have notched up a hat trick of new signings including ODLO and Coleman® as they reinforce their position as the UK’s leading buying group.
“We are currently experiencing a run of success with our sales and distribution programme, yet, at the same time, we see joining the STAG buying group as central to maintaining that impetus as we continue to drive our business strategy forward”, said Gordon Fraser, Anatom’s Managing Director. Continuing he commented, “We feel the partnership with STAG sends a clear signal to the independent retail trade about our ambitions to build market share in that key sector. A sector that is watchword for the integrity of the brand and a sector that offers compelling benefits to all consumers, everywhere”
Looking ahead to the link with Anatom, Ward Robertson, Managing Director of STAG, commented, “I can fairly say that we see eye to eye with each other in our strategic approach to the outdoor market”. He continued, “Both organisations recognise the pre-eminent position of the independent retailer as a major force in the outdoor market and we also recognise that the success of our new working arrangement can be judged squarely on our relationships with the independent retailing community”. “It is a forward thinking community that shares a progressive philosophy built on the lasting foundations of fair competition and sustainable growth”
…AND NOW THE GOOD NEWS.
12th September 2008
We have been inundated with bad news, supported by dire statistics, which seem to presage a new economic Ice Age.
Yet there is a shaft of light that has shone through the dark clouds hovering over the economic outlook. And this favourable, if unexpected, news is from, of all places, the Retail Sector.
Positive, upbeat data from the Office of National Statistics reported sales volumes rising by 0.8% in July, sending analysts in a flat spin because of their predictions of a 0.3% fall. Enough to make your heart sing!
Sales growth, on the month, stretched across the board with footwear and clothing in the ascendancy. Cheaper lines and discounted items performed especially well suggesting, perhaps, a shift in buying patterns as food and energy prices continued their seemingly inexorable rise.
So there you have it. However the rest of the year pans out we can say for July that despite the pressures on domestic budgets the consumer, who might be on the ropes, still has the resilience to fight back and refuses to beat a full retreat from the High Street.
And there is further good news in the offing that can affect consumer’s purchasing behaviour in a positive way. Analysts are anticipating the next interest rate news from the Bank of England to be in a downwards direction. In time for the Christmas shopping season?
CONSUMER MORAL LIFTED AS THEY BATHE
IN THE REFLECTED AFTERGLOW OF OLYMPIC GLORY.
11th September 2008
The heady cocktail of fond memories of very recent summer holidays, falling petrol prices and Britain’s best Olympic medal haul for a century has given an unexpected lift to consumer morale in August according to a recent survey conducted by GfK NOP.
A breakdown of the research also showed that Britons were less gloomy about their own financial outlook and the state of the economy over the next 12 months.
Although British Olympic success played an important part in this feel-good or at least feel-better factor, with respondents in the second half of the month giving a score that was on average 3 points higher than those questioned before Britain had reached the giddy heights of fourth in the final medal table, it was found that falling oil prices and the continuation of the supermarket price war had made their own telling impact.
So its not all wall-to-wall consumer pessimism, as the gainsayers would have it and it serves us well to be heralds of good news in these columns, at these times, than just harbingers of woe.
Hopefully, this sudden but heartfelt patriotic fillip will contain some durability, at least for a while, and have, in turn, its own part to play through being translated into positive buying behaviour by shoppers in their own High Street.
Making a Show of Ourselves

Retail Independence: A Strategy
4th August 2008
Today the talking point is the grim and seemingly relentless financial news which saps morale more and more as we are buffeted by sharp economic headwinds. However, in this edition we would like to look further ahead to an issue that affects us all. It is an issue that will still be a talking point long after the black clouds of this economic cycle, like others before it, have passed.
The subject we would like to look at is how to best to support the independent retailers. As a way of giving consideration to this vital issue we have looked at, in line with other sections of the trade press, the Conservative Party’s recently published report on how they would help give support to the independent retailer. The report entitled A Strategy for Successful Community Hubs has pointed the finger of blame at a number of problems from poor planning to anti-social behavior and from out-of-town shopping developments to the high cost of parking. As a way forward, to secure the future of the independent retailer and not just to slow down the decline, the report identifies a number of recommendations.
These highlights include:
A fair business rents and rate scheme for the independent retailer.
Harmonisation between out-of-town retail schemes and the requirements of the community at large.
More initiatives to fight crime and the excesses of yob culture.
A review of parking provision and the related costs and charges.
Local communities working together to enhance the standing and quality of their high street.
Are we looking at a hard nosed set of workable policies that will see the renaissance of the high street or ill-starred pipe dreams? Time will tell but we would welcome your own views on this vexed but critically important subject.
STAG OUTSTRIPS MARKET
AS SIGNINGS GATHER PACE AND MEMBER’S SALES CLIMB
29th July 2008
The STAG Buying Group continued its upward trend in the UK market as its member’s sales were closing in on £200 million at retail. New signings such as Cat Footwear, Coleman, Magnum and Gola Sport stepped up the pace of the Group’s march on new business, further cementing its leadership position in the buying sector.
Commenting on the batch of new signings, Ward Robertson, Managing Director of the STAG Buying Group said: “Despite the credit squeeze and buffeting from the headwinds of a weakening economy the wheels of commerce keep turning.”
Ward added: “Whilst we are quite thrilled with the companies that have just joined us, we are still in the process of building our community of suppliers and members. An ambitious community and one built on the cornerstones of fair competition, brand integrity, sustainable growth, and a full belief in the outstanding benefits to the consumer of independent retailing.”
“It is this self- supporting philosophy,” he concluded “that has the strong sustaining qualities that are so important in the testing trading conditions we are all facing today.”
COUNTER INTELLIGENCE FROM STAG
Good to Think: Better to Know
6th June 2008
The STAG Buying Group is leveraging its position as market leader in the industry sector by launching its own newssheet. Called Counter Intelligence with the descriptive strap line “Good to Think: Better To Know”. The information based newsletter, which is currently circulating amongst STAG’s membership, has been launched to help provide a more effective dialogue amongst members and suppliers who make up the STAG family.
Commenting on the launch of Counter Intelligence, Ward Robertson, STAG’S Managing Director, said: “As I mentioned in the introduction to our new bulletin, we are happy to welcome readers to the first issue of Counter Intelligence and we will be particularly interested in our members’ reaction because maintaining a dialogue is very important to us.”
Continuing, he stated: “This is an evidence based newssheet which we will be issuing regularly and which, as it develops, will offer more relevant, statistical information as well as market led opinion.”
He added: “News and information, I should stress, which affects our member’s world as well as perhaps the real world, too.” “Watch this space!”
One of the first stories concentrates on the STAG show; informing readers that it is now fully booked for exhibitors and with only limited space for STAG members at the hotel.
STAG CONFIRMS POSITION AS MARKET LEADER
WITH MORE MAJOR SIGNINGS.
23rd May 2008
The STAG Buying Group moved to strengthen its position as leader in the buying sector by signing up a clutch of major brands in both the sports and outdoor markets. The leading brands that have joined the Buying Group include MBT, Masai Barefoot Technology, RFE, who control Reebok Fitness and Gold’s Gym, Dalesman, one of the UK’s leading outdoor distributors, Glenway Trophies, itself a market leader, and Molten Sports.
Commenting on the signings, Ward Robertson, Managing Director of STAG said: “We are naturally delighted that such well known brands and leaders in their respective markets have become suppliers of our Buying Group”
Ward continued: “I believe it is fair to say that we at STAG and the suppliers that have joined us have a shared philosophy of planned and sustainable growth, maintaining the integrity of our brands and providing the consumer with the benefits competitive purchasing.”
“Few are immune from the prevailing winds of an economy that is now showing every sign of going off the boil”. He added. “The Buying Group concept stands up well in this tough trading environment when there is strength in numbers and where it is possible, to use the Old Wild West analogy, to draw the wagons into a protective circle.”
20 years of success for STAG member
29th April 2008
Norton Sports and Camping, a STAG member since 2003, is celebrating 20 years in business.
The sports and outdoor retailer, based in Midsomer Norton is owned and run by John Sharp who is supported by his dedicated team who are committed to helping customers find just what they want.
"Our aim has always been to supply local people with what they are looking for without having to travel into Bristol or Bath and being able to access key brands through STAG certainly helps." said John.
The shop celebrates a love of sport and the outdoor life and has an impressive range of equipment, clothes and accessories.
"Our customers demand quality. Being a member of STAG gives us the opportunity to access that quality through major brands and take advantage of some very competitive discounts. Brands such as Gelert and Hi-Tec for the outdoor market and Puma, Mitre, Emsmorn and Umbro amongst others for the sports market are all popular choices for our customers".
"We see our association with STAG as very important. It accounts for at least 60% of our business and we'll always choose to source what we sell, through them." declared John. With the STAG portfolio of brands constantly growing, 130 at the last count, there's always plenty of choice.
John's team are so dedicated to giving their customers what they want that if they can't find exactly what they are looking for they promise to do their best to get it and quickly.
Ward Robertson MD of STAG said "It's that level of service that makes customers return and it's that level of service that helps give the Independent retailers the edge. We support retailers like Norton Sports and Camping by giving them access to a huge range of brands that their customers desire."
And it's dedication which has earned John and his team the enviable reputation they have built up over the past two decades. With retail becoming more and more competitive, you have to think that it will be those same qualities that will stand Norton Sports and Camping in good stead for the future.
STAG member celebrates 40 years in business
22nd April 2008
STAG retailer and former Swindon Town footballer, Don Rogers, is celebrating 40 years of success off the pitch following his hugely successful career on it.
Don, a STAG member for nearly a decade, has had his sports shop, Don Rogers Sports, in the same road in Swindon since 1968. A year later Don achieved hero status amongst Swindon fans when he led the team to a 3-1 victory against Arsenal in the 1969 League Cup Final.
Rogers' shop, which offers a range of specialist footballing goods and services, has survived and prospered despite the growth of the larger corporate names that have moved into Swindon town centre.
He said: "We joined STAG nearly 10 years ago and it has been one of the best business decisions we have made. We get access to leading brands at unbeatable discounts."
“Being part of STAG means we can compete with the high street chains and offer our customers what they want and more. It allows us to focus on good service and that is our strength as customers come back year after year.”
Ward Robertson MD at STAG adds his praise "To be in business for 40 years is certainly an accomplishment in itself but Sports Retail can be tough and competition fierce, so you have to congratulate Don for this remarkable achievement."
A regular at the annual STAG Show, Don is looking forward to the new venue for this years show. Previously the show has been staged at Heythrop Park but the 08 show will be held for the first time at the brand new Cotswold Water Park 4 Pillars Hotel.
Don enthused: "The STAG Show in November is a must. I never miss it, there's always excellent business deals to be done during those two days. I'm really looking forward to this years show at the new venue and as it's just around the corner from me I could probably cycle there this year."

STAG Buying Group – New Members!
14th February 2008
Seven new members have joined STAG Buying Group in January.
Ward Robertson, Managing Director of STAG Buying Group says, “We’ve had an incredibly successful past twelve months set against the market trend. More and more Independent retailers are acknowledging the benefits of being part of STAG. Every new member adds to our strength and will benefit us all and we’re delighted to welcome them to the fastest growing buying group in the UK.”
The seven new members have retail outlets throughout the UK and represent a diverse range of retailers with Sport and Outdoor being the most prominent sectors. The businesses will benefit from membership of the UK’s largest Sports Buying Group with ongoing support and exclusive offers from the UK’s leading brands.
STAG Buying Group represents over 600 independent retail outlets that in combination have extraordinary buying power with over 170 leading brands committed to providing exceptional service to STAG members.
Ward Robertson says, “Yes, our collective buying power is attractive to retailers. Yes, more members increase our value to leading brands. And yes, we will continue to proactively support members in every aspect of their business . New members get instant access to everything we provide.”
STAG Buying Group is going from strength to strength and is looking forward to another exceptional year of business for members and brands, building on last year’s dramatic growth. Says Ward Robertson, “We are constantly looking for new ways to further help our members and 2008 will be no different.
STAG release positive growth figures despite economic gloom
11th February 2008
The STAG Buying Group has today released figures that defy the current economic climate, defying the retail trend with a 20% increase in growth over the last 12 months.
Managing Director, Ricky Chandler says, “These are challenging times in the retail industry right now, and we believe these results illustrate the importance of what we are offering our members. STAG is helping the Independent retailer not only survive the current climate but seize new opportunities and increase profits”.
The STAG Buying Group undertook extensive rebranding two years ago and matched their investment with ongoing commitment to members’ interests. Says Chandler “Our members are demanding, as they have a right to be. We make sure we exceed their expectations and add value to their businesses in a tight market”.
STAG attribute their impressive figures to the highest level of support for their 400 plus members. Certainly this bullish growth bucks the trend in a sector that has been under relentless pressure throughout the UK. Leading Brands represented by STAG have also seen their business increase with up to 80% of the 170 brands seeing a rise in turnover with STAG members.
The STAG Buying Group has shown a proactivity rarely seen in any sector with a host of new initiatives launched in 2007 to increase business for all members from the appointment of a Member Liaison Officer, the ongoing Direct Mailer with exclusive special offers and the Xmas Mailer initiative in the run up to the festive period.
Says Chandler, “It’s tough out there at the moment but we’re always looking at ways to further help our members. It’s a competitive market, and there’s always more to achieve but we’re proud to reveal our successes to date.
Expect to see even more initiatives from STAG over the coming months.
STAG Buying Group at ISPO
7th February 2008
STAG Buying Group attended the ISPO Winter Show in Munich on 27th – 30th January in an ongoing effort to research the market for the best products and services for its members.
Managing Director, Ward Robertson says, “The ISPO Winter Show at the New Munich Trade Fair gave us a chance to research the latest trends, developments and innovations by the National and International Sporting Goods industry. As the largest Sports Buying Group in the UK, it’s our job to stay abreast of the latest developments as early as possible to ensure we continue to supply to our members’ every requirement.
STAG regularly attends ISPO events including the 2007 Summer and Winter Shows. Says Ward Robertson, “New developments including both innovation and fashion are increasingly important to our members. They need to be able to offer the most attractive propositions to their customers and the ISPO shows give us insight into International trends. Our members cannot afford to be behind the times, and we ensure we stay on top of the market”.
An opportunity to buck the economic downturn – join a buying group!
30th January 2008
After fears of a poor Christmas for the high street, official data has revealed a worse than expected fall in retail sales in December, despite aggressive price cuts on the part of retailers. The Office for National Statistics stated that sales fell 0.4% in December confounding City forecasts for a 0.2% rise – the worst monthly figure since January 2007, and providing a gloomy forecast for 2008.
Experts are predicting that 2008 will be a difficult year in retail and consumer spending will continue to soften. Ian Kernohan, Economist at Royal London Asset Management said, “the UK economy is slowing rapidly” and Howard Archer at Global Insight has predicted "increasing concerns about the economic outlook are likely to further encourage consumers to tighten their belts".
One possibility for the independent retailer to buck the economic trend could be to join a buying group. STAG the sports, outdoor, lifestyle & leisure buying group’s Managing Director, Ward Robertson believes “ More than ever joining a buying group is the most important decision an independent retailer can make in these uncertain times. Gloomy forecasts for the retail sector are that – forecasts and now is the time for retailers to make the right decisions to protect their business interests in the months ahead”.
By being part of the STAG Buying Group, its members can enjoy a host of benefits including access to 170 leading suppliers with the buying power that over 600 retail outlets represented. Says Ward Robertson, “It is very difficult for an independent retailer to compete with big chains on their own. STAG gives members a genuine advantage in the market, without sacrificing their autonomy”.
He continues, “Retailers get bulk buying discounts, reduced administration and therefore reduced costs, and Suppliers get greater market share, reduced operational costs and everyone gets greater profits. It’s a win, win, win and we don’t believe there’s any independent retailer who can afford to miss out on the advantages we offer”.
STAG provides improved profitability from the first day of membership – better discounts, greater buying access, reduced operational costs, free brand and business promotions, improved sales to key targets and much greater profile leading to increased market share. Says Ward Robertson, “When you join STAG you enjoy all this and more, and importantly keep total control of what you do, and protection for your independence”.
Over 400 independent retailers with over 600 retail outlets, and over 170 leading brands already agree, with more joining every week. Joining STAG Buying Group, really could be the most important and advantageous decision you make, this year.
Webster World Champion 2008
15th January 2008
STAG supplier Winmau are making the news again. This time it was the very exciting finnish to the World Championship that had TV audiences gripped. Winmau’s Mark Webster took his first World Championship in superb style on Sunday night and earned £85,000 for the privilege. He won his world title with a 7-5 victory over the very talented and dogged Aussie Simon Whitlock.
Left-hander Webster hammered the doubles of the Winmau Blade III from start to finish and held his nerve despite a few flutters to complete a dream week. Webster, a qualifier last year, put out defending champion and England captain Martin Adams in another fantastic semi final match.
Whitlock was biting at Webster’s heels from the off, with superb heavy scoring but ultimately, he paid the price for a slow start. Webster stormed into a 3-0 lead and always had his nose in front.
Winmau’s Welsh World Champion pledged to stay with the BDO so he can carry on playing for his beloved Wales.
Mark said: “This week has been absolutely unbelievable, I have experienced so many highs and lows it’s hard to put it into words. I’ve had a brilliant tournament this year at Lakeside and enjoyed myself thoroughly”
And even before Sunday night’s triumph he was looking forward to returning in 2009. He added: “Winmau had a special set of darts made for me the week before the tournament and they felt so good that I took them into the Lakeside un-tested in any event, from the first throw they fitted like a glove and gave me great confidence, I just can’t wait for next year now”.
As Darts hottest property Mark faces a high profile year and a full tournament calendar and hopefully you’ll join us in wishing Mark the very best for a superb 2008 and our congratulations in being a worthy World Champion.

Dennis said “I’m glad we took the extra time and effort in making this range of darts, and they are now just how I like them! The Winmau Development team were superb and very patient with me as I am a perfectionist when it comes to my darts, and these more than make the grade. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do”.

STAG member’s marathon commitment
8th December 2007
Dougie Tobutt of Tobutt Sports (www.runningandfitness.co.uk) is a regular attendee at the STAG Buying Show… but not this year. This year, Dougie flew to Macau, China to prepare for his 107th Marathon. STAG Managing Director Ward Robertson said, “We’ll miss Dougie at the Show but he goes to China with our full support and encouragement – you can’t help but respect commitment like this. We think he’s incredible”.
Commitment is exactly what Dougie Tobutt is about. Dougie said, “I’ve only ever missed one other STAG Buying Show… and that was because I had a marathon to run. I’ll be thinking of everyone and looking forward to hearing all about it when I’m back“.
Dougie is formerly a professional sportsman who’s shown dedication throughout his life in his sport, business and associations to achieve real success. Said Dougie, “I was told over 20 years ago to stop running but this will be my 107th marathon since then. I’ve run in 37 countries, over 6 continents and I’m aiming to run a marathon in Antarctica to complete the “continental set” in 2009. It just goes to show, that if you keep doing what you’re good at, you just get better at what you do!”
Ward said, “What Dougie says is right. We’re proud of Dougie’s commitment to STAG over the years. We see it as an important indicator that we’re doing what we should be doing for our members”.
When asked about the next STAG Show Dougie had this to say, “Of course I’ll be at the next STAG Buying Show. Let’s face it, only wild marathon runners could keep me away, STAG always put on a fantastic show – it’s a great weekend of business and getting the inside track with other retailers. You could say, I like the inside track!”
STAG launches new member service today
7th December 2007
STAG’s commitment to members has always been unprecedented… and today it just got even better. STAG has created a new company role entitled Members Co-ordinator to further even closer relationships with STAG Buying Group members.
The role has been designed to create closer links with members promoting new initiatives internally and externally with a critical responsibility to provide increased feedback to STAG on member’s requirements and expectations.
Managing Director Ricky Chandler said “We want to get feedback from our members and have provided a dedicated resource to facilitate this. We need to know where we’re doing well and more importantly where we could be doing better. This way, we can constantly evolve our service in keeping with member’s real wants and desires”.
As you’d expect from STAG the role has been carefully considered and an important internal appointment has been made with Maureen Gilchrist rising to take on the challenge. Members will know Maureen as Mo, and welcome her appointment after 2 years in Credit Control for the Buying Group. Maureen brings an unrivalled understanding of both STAG and it’s members to the role.
Ricky Chandler continues, “Mo knows and understands our members not just from personal contact but also with a keen eye on finance which is critical to our independent retailers. This isn’t a woolly appointment. It’s a role that we highly value and as with any new initiative it is critical that we choose the best possible hands to further its potential”.
With over 400 members and 600 outlets, the appointment is integral to the ongoing development of STAG and builds on the back of a number of very successful member initiatives including the exclusive Special Offers Site and the free Xmas Mailer. Maureen can be contacted at maureeng@stagbuyinggroup.com
WINMAU Wins Big
7th December 2007
There’s nothing like sharing good news between STAG members and suppliers and showing our support for their success. And what success – Winmau Dartboard Co held the televised Winmau World Masters at Bridlington which made gripping television and amassed outstanding viewing figures on the BBC. No wonder with a 9-Dart 501 checkout from John Boy Walton, and an unseeded 2007 Men’s Master in Scotland’s Robert Thornton gain automatic entry to the 2008 Lakeside World Professional!
The event was action packed with two maximum checkouts from John Walton and Darryl Fitton and a singe dart average of 31+ for the Men’s televised stage matches. For Thornton not only was it his first ever victory in a World Major and the biggest cheque of his career - £25,000, but he is now drawn to play Walton in the first round of the prestigious 2008 Lakeside World Professional Championship in January.
BBC1 viewing figures averaged 1.2 million, peaking at 1.6 million (12.8% share of the available audience on the Saturday). BBC2 on the Sunday saw an audience peak of 1.9 million for the final between Scotland’s Thornton and England’s Fitton. Incredibly the last time Thornton played at Lakeside he was beaten 5-0 by Fitton in the quarter final.
STAG is delighted to congratulate Winmau on such high profile sponsorship of this enormously successful event and wishes every success for the winners as they take on the next challenge.
STAG Outdoor gains higher profile at Buying Show
6th December 2007
The STAG Buying Show is a highlight in the Outdoor event calendar, and 2007’s Buying Show was a huge success for the Outdoor sector. The UK’s largest sports Buying Show included 23 leading Outdoor Brands comprising a quarter of all brands present and illustrating STAG’s ongoing commitment to Outdoor members.
Held at Heythrop Park Hotel, Golf and Country Club, Oxfordshire on 18th and19th November 2007, this was the largest Buying Show so far.
Managing Director Ward Robertson said, “It outperformed even our expectations and we knew it was going to be bigger than ever. It makes a difference to include luminaries in the Outdoor sector including Merrell, Jack Wolfskin, Timberland and Cool Brands… to name a few”.
STAG is focused on offering the best brands at the best prices to independent retailers specialising in the Outdoors. “Success is a two way street at the Show” said Ward. “Brands are successful because they bring the right offers to retailers and retailers come back because they get the right offers.”
The STAG Buying Show brings together over 85 leading brands from the Sports, Outdoor, Shoe, Lifestyle and Leisure Sectors along with independent retailers from around the UK. Brands in 2007 included: Merrell, Aerobed, Hilly Clothing, Jack Wolfskin, Hi Tec, Outdoor Scene, Samsonite and Timberland. As the buying opportunity of the year, retailers and suppliers take the opportunity to do real business throughout the two days. Hilary Mills of Summitreks enthused about the STAG show and was very pleased to see an increased presence of leading outdoor brands. Hilary revealed, “You see things at the STAG show you may not have previously ordered”.
Adrian Gardiner of Merrell said, “This is our first time at the show and it won’t be our last. We’ve done very good business over the last two days”. Countless suppliers would agree. “Just about everyone who has visited the stand has bought. I would say we have had a 98% success rate”, said Paul Hendry of Trion:Z of his first STAG Buying Show.
It seems STAG has unlocked the key to success not just with the largest sports Buying Show in the UK, but increasingly across the Outdoor sector as well.
Surprise winners win WINMAU competition
6th December 2007
One of the many fun opportunities at this year’s STAG Buying Show was a six dart challenge sponsored by Winmau Dartboard Company. Members and suppliers alike lined up to give it their best shot aiming for the highest score from six darts and there was much hilarity as players of all abilities enjoyed the challenge. Even more hilarity when the winners were discovered to be none other than STAG Managing Director, Ricky Chandler’s own family Rachel and Joe Chandler!
Ricky said, “We knew it looked bad… even Fiona Bluck from Winmau asked me if we spend all our time practicing as a family but to be honest, as far as I know, we’ve only ever had the odd throw in the local pub”. Fiona from Winmau said, “We couldn’t help but wind up Ricky a bit but you can’t cheat on darts – the points are the points, and Rachel and Joe were the outright winners scoring 144 and 141 respectively”.
Rachel and Joe were delighted with their prizes - first prize, a bottle of Moet & Chandon Champagne; and second prize, a Winmau Blade III and set of darts.
Ricky said, “we won’t be giving up our day jobs, but I might need to start keeping a closer eye on the family”. It looks like there are hidden talents indeed in the Chandler family, but you can be sure Ricky will be keeping his eye on the main prize… which will always be focused on the success of STAG for members and suppliers alike.
Unprecedented success at STAG Buying Show
5th December 2007
The 2007 STAG Buying Show has proven to be yet another unprecedented success. Held at Heythrop Park Hotel, Golf and Country Club, Oxfordshire on 18th and19th November 2007, it was the largest Buying Show so far.
Managing Director Ward Robertson said, “The Buying Show was sold out eight months before the event and we had to ask for more space for our suppliers. We knew it was going to be big and going by the reactions of our retail members it was a huge success”.
The STAG Buying Show brings together over 85 leading brands from the Sports, Outdoor, Shoe, Lifestyle and Leisure Sectors along with independent retailers from around the UK. It is the buying opportunity of the year, with retailers and suppliers taking the opportunity to do real business throughout the two days.
“It’s the perfect place to book orders”, said STAG member Derek Barnard of Barnard Sports. Beth Kidby of A3 Sports, who has seen turnover treble since joining the buying group remarked that the show was “very professionally run”.
Tom Kavanagh of Puma said “STAG retailers always put their money where their mouth is. When they come to the show, they place orders. This is why we make it our business to be at the STAG show every time”. Edward van Wezel, General Manager at Hi-Tec Sports declared “We wrote business for 2,500 pairs of football boots alone, coming to the STAG Show is definitely worth it.”
And the figures certainly stack up for Maria Aries of Sunwise Sunglasses “The number of visitors who came to our stand increased by 44%. This has brought in 25% more sales orders than last year.”
Peter Cowdrey of GAIAM said, “We have not only converted business but made really good leads for the future. We’re impressed by how highly organised the STAG Show is”. His colleague Steve Martin would agree, “The STAG Show has given us fantastic exposure to some excellent retailers. We will definitely look to come back next year”.
STAG’s Buying Show has been the trade event of the year. Ward Robertson said, “STAG’s goal is to keep delivering to members and our members are demanding more. Given the success of each buying show we have to consistently review and ensure each one exceeds expectations for both supplier and STAG member.”
Countless exhibitors would agree. “Just about everyone who has visited the stand has bought. I would say we have had a 98% success rate”, said Paul Hendry of Trion:Z of his first STAG Buying Show.
David Brint of Footie Chick is a regular exhibitor and said, “This is the best STAG Show. We have taken repeat orders and opened new accounts. By the start of the second day, we had exceeded targets for the complete show! We’re looking forward to the next show.”
STAG Buying Group team up with SGB in media partnership
4th December 2007
STAG and SGB have renewed their working partnership. This means the title can now act as a means of delivery for information to STAG members – while of course maintaining its editorial independence.
Ward Robertson, Managing Director of STAG, said: “STAG has taken the decision to include SGB in our media partnership for the trade as we feel that it is a better balance for ourselves to communicate clearly with the established trade publications which all of our customer base reads at some point. We’re very pleased about it; we think SGB as a magazine is developing with a clearer focus and a real willingness to offer the readership a balanced and well thought-out viewpoint on what is actually happening in the trade.”
SGB Editor Jon Bruford said of the partnership: "This is a fantastic opportunity for us to work alongside a forward thinking buying group like STAG with SGB as a forward thinking title. It looks like a match made in heaven, and we should complement each other superbly."
Paul Ryder, SGB - Sports and Outdoor publisher, concluded: “We are very pleased to be working with STAG once again which is a further endorsement of the positive changes that are taking place here at SGB.”

26th November 2007
Building on the outstanding success of the Sport, Outdoor, Shoe and Equestrian markets, STAG continues to increase it’s exposure in the emerging and significant Printwear and Promotion market in the UK.
Ward Robertson, Managing Director of STAG said, “As the largest sports buying group in the UK, we’re committed to excellence for brands and members alike. The Printwear and Promotion Market increasingly is demanding the same high quality supply as our independent retailers. This is an exciting next step”.
“Companies are increasingly seeing the benefits in providing high quality, branded work wear for staff. High quality is quickly becoming recognised as real value for money not just for longevity of work wear but also in terms of consumer perception and staff morale”, continues Robertson.
“Through STAG, Printwear and Promotion retailers will now be able to buy into our strength and access leading brands and cutting edge design at the right price points”, added Robertson.
Carole Lerway, Director of Initially Yours in Bristol agrees, “We joined STAG for a number of reasons but critically to continue to provide consistent and reliable supply of high quality stock to our customers at competitive prices. Staggering increase in turnover by STAG supplier
23rd November 2007
STAG shoe supplier Gardiner Bros has seen a staggering increase in turnover in three years, nearly quadrupling sales to STAG members.
Established over 130 years ago, Gardiner Bros is a stalwart in the shoe industry. Based in Gloucester, Gardiner Bros distribute their own label footwear along with brands such as Puma and Hi-Tec. James Gardiner said, “Our turnover to STAG members has increased by a multiple of 3.65 since 2004 which is an impressive figure by any accounting”.
Ward Robertson of STAG agrees, “We’ve been working a long time with Gardiner Bros and we know them as a hugely respected giant in the industry. To see their success in partnership with ours is exactly what we hope to deliver to every brand and every member”.
STAG is the UK’s largest Sports Buying Group with a range of specialist buying markets including Sport, Outdoor, Shoe, Equestrian and the recently added, Printwear and Promotions. STAG’s success is in delivering to leading brands, the immense buying power of their collective membership of retailers. Said Ward Robertson, “our members see exclusive offers and a variety of special discounts, particularly at our Buying Shows which are built on the back of our close relationships with our supply brands. This isn’t our only success story… but you have to admit, it’s a good one”.
